She was born visually & hearing impaired when many modern aids were unavailable. Considering Hellen Keller’s very special circumstances, Anne Sullivan could not be just a teacher. At that time the term ‘coach’ was not prevalent. But whatever little I had read about their 49-years’ relationship, Anne was coach par excellence with unconditional positive regard for Hellen. She believed that the whole person is more than the sum of her parts. What else can explain Hellen Keller growing up to become a prolific author, political activist, and lecturer?
There are many similar examples in India too. One such case is Arunima Sinha. She conquered Mount Everest despite left leg amputation 2 years before, being the victim of a terrible criminal act. Behind Arunima was her brother Omprakash’s encouragement and guidance of famous mountaineer Bachendri Pal.
The power of human endeavor is unquestionable. Every person has huge potential waiting to be tapped and directed. The potential blossoms through one’s own effort aided by the effort of some others around her. Such a brilliant human possibility becomes the path of exciting exploration between a coach and a client. This is the reason why everyone would benefit from a coach, in whatever stage of life one is.
Steve Jobs, Co-founder, and CEO of Apple had John Mattone, Marc Benioff, Founder, Chairman, CEO of Salesforce.com has Tony Robbins, Brian C. Cornell, Chairman, and CEO, Target Corporation has Marshall Goldsmith, Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon, had Bill Campbell as his coach. The further you go in your career, the more you need a coach who can see what you don’t see, hear what you don’t hear, tell what no one tells you.
I am reminded of Nietzsche, who said “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” Do you have a 'why' to live for? If yes, then get a coach soon to find your 'how'.
